NIGERIA: IYC Urges FG To Take Action Against Sponsors Of Terrorism

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) of Bayelsa State, have urged the Federal Government to adopt a proactive and drastic action against sponsors of terrorism in the country.

This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja, on Tuesday by its spokesman, Eric Omare.

The group urged the federal government to adopt a strategy aimed at preventing further loss of lives and property.

The group condemned Monday’s terrorist attack on a Nyanya motor park in a
suburb of the FCT which claimed over 71 lives with dozens injured.

The IYC commiserated with the families of the victims and urged the government to identify the source, buyers and importers of the arms being used for the dastardly act.

The group also call on the government to block the sources of the weapons and punish the importers.

"Considering the deadly nature of attack and the implication on our national security, the IYC call on the Federal Government to take drastic and far reaching steps against sponsors of terrorism in Nigeria" it stated.

IYC pointed out that the menace of terrorism could not be resolved without tackling the source of their sponsorship, and called for the arrest and prosecution of the sponsors of Boko Haram to serve as deterrence.

The statement further urged the government to use all the security apparatus at its disposal to unravel the sponsors of terrorism and insurgency in the country.

"Government must act decisively, irrespective of whose ox is gored and protect the ordinary people of Nigeria" it stated. "The interest of the generality of Nigerians is over and above the interest of a few power hungry people who are sponsoring terrorism".

IYC, however, commended the efforts of security agencies in tackling the security challenges.

The group also urged the federal government to extend the state of emergency in the North East region.

"The Nyanya attack has shown that Boko Haram has an agenda to extend its activities to other parts of the country once they are successful in overrunning the North East" it said.
