Kidnappers of Bayelsa Speaker’s inlaw demand N40m

The kidnappers of Mrs. Ogbona Orumo, the 90-year-old mother-in-law of the Speaker, Bayelsa House of Assembly, Mr. Kombowei Benson, has demanded N40m ransom before the nonagenarian could be freed.

Orumo was kidnapped last Friday by unknown gunmen from her Seibiri home in Korokorosei community of Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State.
The elderly woman was taken through the creeks of the community to an unknown destination.
Since Orumo’s abduction, her family had been apprehensive of the old woman’s wellbeing as no word was heard from her abductors.

But early this week, the kidnappers were said to have contacted Orumo’s family and demanded N40m ransom.
Traditional rulers in the state have however condemned the abduction of the nonagenarian and called on the State Government to be proactive in the area of security in the state.

Chairman, Bayelsa Traditional Rulers Council, King Godwin Igodo, who had himself been a victim of abduction and spent 29 days in the kidnappers’ den in 2013, said the rising cases of kidnapping in the state had become worrisome.
Igodo said in Yenagoa on Thursday that the activities of armed kidnappers were strange to the culture of the Ijaw people.

“I have been a victim of this nefarious act. I spent 29 days in the den of kidnappers under the rain and the sun,” the traditional ruler lamented.

Meanwhile, Benson visited his inlaws on Wednesday as regard the incident.
The Speaker called for the establishment of a mobile police base in Korokorosei community  as part of security measures.
Benson, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Preye Kiyaramo, sympathized with his in-laws over the kidnap.

He appealed to the family members to be patient, as the matter had been reported to the police for action.
